Is Your Website Ready for the Holidays? A Practical Checklist for Busy Season

Topic: holiday website checklist

Holiday traffic is coming whether your website is ready or not. Use this practical checklist to fix hours, offers, checkout, booking, and mobile issues before busy season starts.

Holiday traffic is coming whether your website is ready or not. From late October through December, customers search earlier, compare faster, and give a slow or confusing site far less patience than they do in July. A few focused fixes now can be the difference between a busy season you capture and one you watch go to a competitor.

We prepare websites for restaurants, retailers, and service companies across the Charlotte metro every fall. The work is rarely a redesign. It is a short check of the pages customers will actually use when they are in a hurry. Here is the checklist we use.

Update hours, dates, and deadlines first

This is the simplest fix and the one most often missed. If your holiday hours, last order dates, booking cutoffs, or seasonal closure days are wrong — or missing — customers will assume the worst and go elsewhere.

Check the homepage, contact page, footer, and any service page that mentions scheduling. Make sure the dates match what you post on social media and your Google Business Profile. One consistent answer builds trust; three different answers create doubt.

Make holiday offers easy to find — and easy to act on

A great seasonal offer hidden three clicks deep is not an offer. It is a secret. Put your main holiday page, menu, package, or promotion where a first-time visitor will see it: a clear section on the homepage, a link in the main navigation, and a direct path from the pages people land on from search.

Each offer needs the same basics in plain language: what it is, who it is for, what it costs or how pricing works, when it ends, and one clear next step. Book now, order by this date, or call for availability — pick one primary action per page and make that button impossible to miss.

Test checkout, booking, and contact on a phone

Most holiday visits will happen on a phone, often in short bursts between other tasks. That is exactly when a broken form, a calendar that will not load, or a checkout step that asks for too much information loses the sale.

We test the full path the way a customer does: find the offer on a phone, tap to book or buy, complete the form, and confirm the confirmation actually arrives. Test your contact form the same way. If you would not know a submission came in until tomorrow, fix the notification now — not during busy season.

Speed matters more when traffic spikes

A page that feels slow in September can feel broken under heavier holiday traffic, especially on mobile. Large unoptimized images are the most common cause we see, followed by outdated plugins.

You do not need a perfect score. You need your homepage, main offer page, and checkout or booking path to load quickly and work reliably. If those pages stutter now, they will not improve when more people arrive.

Prepare for the questions customers will actually ask

Holiday customers ask predictable questions: Do you deliver or offer pickup? What is the last day to order? Can I buy a gift card? What happens if I need to reschedule? Answering those questions on the relevant pages — and in a short FAQ section — reduces phone calls, prevents misunderstandings, and helps search engines surface your site for exactly those searches.

Gift cards deserve special attention. They are one of the easiest holiday sales to lose online if the link is buried, the denominations are unclear, or the buying process breaks on mobile. Give gift cards a visible place on the homepage and in the navigation during the season.

Check trust signals before you send traffic

Before you spend on ads or send a holiday email, look at your site as a first-time visitor would. Are recent reviews visible? Is the phone number correct and tappable? Do photos show your actual business, team, and work — not generic stock from a decade ago?

Customers are more cautious during the holidays, when scams increase. Clear contact details, a secure connection, consistent information, and real reviews are not decoration. They are why a visitor completes a purchase with you instead of backing out.

Have a simple plan if something breaks

Busy season is the worst time to discover your hosting, backups, or support contact. Confirm who you call if the site goes down, that backups are running, and that more than one person on your team knows how to reach support.

We also recommend a content freeze: once holiday pages are tested and live, avoid major changes to checkout, booking, or navigation until January unless something is broken. Stable beats new and untested in your busiest weeks.

Ready before the rush, not during it

None of this requires rebuilding your website. It requires looking at it through a holiday customer's eyes — hurried, on a phone, comparing options — and removing every obstacle between that visitor and a booking, an order, or a call.
